Our Story

How BAMJOY Came to Be

Founded in England. Built by a parent, for parents.

It Started With a Bedtime

It was half past eight on a Tuesday evening. The same three books were on the shelf. My youngest had heard them so many times he could recite them backwards. I was tired, he was tired, and we were both running out of patience — him with my reading, me with my own voice doing the same voices for the four hundredth time.

I wanted a new story. Not just any story. A story about him. With his name, his dragon, his adventure. I wanted something that would make his eyes go wide instead of glazed. Something that would make bedtime feel like the best part of the day rather than a battle to be survived.

It did not exist. So I decided to build it.

The Idea Takes Shape

The first prototypes were rough. Very rough. The AI of two years ago produced text that was serviceable but rarely magical — grammatically correct, thematically appropriate, and utterly devoid of wonder. I spent months experimenting with prompts, refining structures, testing how different age groups responded to different narrative patterns.

The breakthrough came when I stopped thinking about stories as text and started thinking about them as experiences. The words matter less than the feeling. The child's name in the third sentence matters more than the vocabulary count. A surprising detail — a purple dragon who is afraid of butterflies, a brave girl who can speak to rivers — matters more than plot structure.

When the stories started making my children laugh, I knew I was on to something.

Building in the Dark

BAMJOY was built in the evenings and at weekends, on a laptop in a spare room, with two children asleep upstairs serving as the world's most important user testers. There were no investors, no team, no roadmap on a whiteboard. There was a father who knew what he wanted to build and a lot of trial and error between him and it.

The illustration engine took the longest. Getting AI-generated art to feel warm rather than clinical, joyful rather than generic, consistently child-appropriate rather than occasionally alarming — that was the problem that kept me up at night for the better part of a year.

A single developer, a vision, and an awful lot of Earl Grey tea.

What BAMJOY Became

BAMJOY launched quietly in 2025. No press release. No launch event. Just a link sent to a few parents on a local school forum, with a note that said: "I made this for my kids. Try it and tell me what you think."

The feedback was immediate and overwhelming. Within a fortnight, children across Norfolk were going to bed as pirates, astronauts, and talking foxes. Within a month, BAMJOY had users in Scotland, Wales, and Ireland. Within three months, the platform had generated more than ten thousand stories.

Every single one of those stories was made for a specific child. Every one had their name in it. Somewhere in the country, ten thousand children had a bedtime story where they were the hero. That still feels extraordinary to me.

The Name

BAMJOY is not an acronym — or so it seemed at first. But it became one by accident, and a rather perfect one at that: Bedtime Adventures Made Joyful. It is also a feeling.

The joy of a child who hears their name in a story for the first time. The joy of a parent who sees their exhausted child suddenly, inexplicably, wide awake and asking for another chapter. The joy of bedtime going well, of a connection made, of a memory formed.

That is what BAMJOY is for.

Where We Are Now

BAMJOY is a growing platform. We have a phonics engine aligned to the DfE Letters and Sounds framework. We have ten illustration styles. We have story types for children from six months to thirteen years. We have families in dozens of countries, though our heart is firmly in the UK.

We are still small. We like it that way. Small means we can care about every story, every user, every piece of feedback. Small means when a parent emails to say their daughter cried because she finally got a story where she was the princess and the knight, we can write back personally and mean it.

A Company Built on a Few Simple Beliefs

We believe children deserve better than generic. We believe parents deserve tools that actually help. We believe bedtime should be the best part of the day. We believe that reading is a gift, and that any technology that makes children love reading more is technology worth building.

We believe in privacy. We believe in safety. We believe in building things that are genuinely, honestly good for children — not just for engagement metrics, not just for growth charts, but for the small human beings who will remember these stories for the rest of their lives.

Thank You

Thank you for using BAMJOY. Thank you for trusting us with your child's bedtime. Thank you for the feedback, the kind emails, and the occasional photograph of a child asleep with a BAMJOY story still open on the screen.

We are building something we are proud of. We hope it shows.
