Accessibility Statement
Last updated: 6 May 2026 · BAMJOY LTD — Registered in England & Wales · ICO Registration: ZB924199
1. Our Commitment to Accessibility
BAMJOY is committed to making our platform accessible to everyone — including people with disabilities, parents with access needs, and children who benefit from additional support. We believe that great storytelling should be available to every family, regardless of ability.
We aim to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at Level AA across all areas of the BAMJOY platform.
2. How Accessible BAMJOY Currently Is
We know that not every part of BAMJOY is fully accessible yet. We are an early-stage platform and are actively working to improve accessibility across all features.
What currently works well:
- Keyboard navigation — core platform navigation can be used without a mouse
- Screen reader compatibility — primary page content is marked up with semantic HTML and ARIA labels
- Colour contrast — text and interactive elements meet WCAG AA contrast ratios across the platform
- Resizable text — the platform responds correctly when browser text size is increased up to 200%
- Focus indicators — interactive elements display visible focus states for keyboard users
- Alt text — AI-generated story illustrations include descriptive alt text
- PDF downloads — story PDFs are generated with accessible text layers
- No flashing content — BAMJOY contains no flashing, strobing, or rapidly changing visual content
Areas we are still improving:
- Audio narration controls — full keyboard control of story audio playback is in development
- Phonics highlighting — colour-based phonics phase indicators will be supplemented with pattern labels for users who cannot distinguish colours
- Mobile accessibility — touch target sizing and gesture navigation are being reviewed
- Community section — ARIA live regions for new posts and notifications are planned
- Complex images — extended descriptions for multi-character story illustrations are under development
3. Technical Specification
BAMJOY is built using React and TypeScript, hosted on Vercel, with data stored in Google Firebase. The platform has been developed with the following accessibility technologies in mind:
- Screen readers — tested with NVDA (Windows) and VoiceOver (macOS and iOS)
- Browser compatibility — Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Edge (latest two major versions)
- Zoom — content is usable at up to 400% zoom without horizontal scrolling on desktop
- Motion sensitivity — animations on the platform are minimal; where present, they respect the user's
prefers-reduced-motionsystem setting
4. Children with Additional Needs
BAMJOY is used by families whose children have a wide range of learning and accessibility needs, including dyslexia, ADHD, autism, and visual or auditory processing differences. We are actively building features to better support these children.
Currently available:
- Adjustable story length — shorter stories for children who find longer texts challenging
- Age-appropriate language — story vocabulary is calibrated to the child's age group
- Audio narration — stories can be listened to rather than read, supporting children with reading difficulties
- UK Phonics Engine — structured phonics support aligned to the DfE Letters and Sounds framework (Phases 2–5), available on The Collection and The Heritage plans
In development:
- Dyslexia-friendly font option — OpenDyslexic font toggle
- High contrast mode — an alternative high-contrast colour scheme for visually impaired users
- Reading speed control — adjustable narration speed for audio stories
- Symbol support — Widgit symbol overlay for pre-readers and children with communication needs

This statement was prepared on 6 May 2026 and will be reviewed and updated every six months, or sooner if significant changes are made to the platform.
